Running With Scissors announces the final four performances of its runaway hit, The Andrews Sisters’ Hollywood Canteen. To accommodate demand, the company has added performances at 8pm on September 2, 9, 23, and 30 at Le Chat Noir.
In 1942, Americans everywhere were doing what they could to help with the World War II effort. Even celebrities pitched in, performing to boost morale on the front lines and on the home front. And of the many, many stars doing their part, none did more than America’s wartime sweethearts, the Andrews Sisters. These three Minnesota songbirds shook up the scene with a swingin’ mix of ballads and boogie-woogie. In The Andrews Sisters’ Hollywood Canteen, Running With Scissors gives 21st century audiences a glimpse of these glamorous gals in all their glory.
Set during a live radio broadcast in a bustling California nightclub, The Andrews Sisters’ Hollywood Canteen is a musical revue featuring dozens of the best-loved songs from the WWII era–including “Stompin’ at the Savoy,” “Stardust,” “Cuanta La Gusta,” “Minnie the Moocher,” and the Sister’s breakthrough hit, “Bei Mir Bist du Schon.” Join in the fun as Patty, LaVerne, and Maxene Andrews (played by Dorian Rush, Brian Peterson, and Elizabeth Pearce) serve up diddies and doughnuts for recent draftee Biff Baxter (Flynn De Marco), crooner Frankie Davero (Rob Thomas), and waitress-turned-songstress Helen Tremaine (RuthAnn Blake). The Andrews Sisters’ Hollywood Canteen was conceived by Mark Sargent, with vocal and instrumental arrangements by Joseph Douglas Collins. The production is sponsored in part by Krispy Kreme Doughnuts.
The Andrews Sisters’ Hollywood Canteen runs Tuesdays, from September 2 through 30 (no show September 16). All performances are at Le Chat Noir, 715 St. Charles Avenue, located in the heart of downtown New Orleans, right on the streetcar line. Tickets are $16 (or $11 with active military ID) and may be purchased in advance by calling 504 581 5812.
